Continuous densification of wood with a belt press: how knot features impact the densification outcome

نویسندگان

چکیده

Densification, i.e. the transverse compression of sawn timber has been studied and commercialised for well over 100 years but remains an expensive niche product with low annual production volumes. One reason this is reliance on time-consuming batch processes in a hot press. To solve this, continuous densification process using belt press, capable densifying full-sized sideboards was developed. However, there insufficient knowledge about effect knots outcome. The objective study to assess how different knot parameters affect densified wood terms damage deformation itself surrounding material. Multivariate data analysis methods were applied dataset 171 knots, described by 23 variables. showed that it possible densify without causing damage. Especially sound are often unproblematic, even at relatively large sizes, while dead resulted unacceptable or wood. From material selection standpoint, any bleeding into board edge greater than 20 mm diameter should be avoided altogether.

Numerical Simulations of Transverse Compression and Densification in Wood

Numerical modeling, such as finite element analysis (FEA), of complex structures and complex materials is a useful tool for stress analysis and for failure modeling. Although FEA of wood as an anisotropic continuum is used, numerical modeling of realistic wood structures, including details of wood anatomy and variations in structure within specimens, has been beyond the capabilities of FEA and ...

ITRF Densification and Continuous Realization by the IGS

The tools and infrastructure are now in place to realize a global, terrestrial, kinematic reference frame with few millimeter precision, which is both spatially dense, and can be reliably updated on a frequent basis (e.g., monthly). A procedure is outlined by which IERS can continuously realize the ITRF using methodology developed by the International GPS Service (IGS). However, spatial densifi...

Snow densification during rain

Observations and measurements indicate rain often has a major impact on snow slope stability. Measurements to investigate the effects of wetting of low density, alpine snow were made at Snoqualmie Pass, WA, USA. Results indicate that on first wetting, the densification rate can increase by three orders of magnitude. This initial burst of densification occurs independently of the gravitational l...
